Calnetix has expertise in both the mechanical and electrical system integration of e-turbos and e-chargers for use in petrol and diesel&nbsp;engines. Significant system performance benefits have been demonstrated for on-road vehicle applications with e-turbo and e-charger systems utilizing Calnetix’s unique&nbsp;<a href="/high-speed-electric-motor-generators">Magnaforce™ motor and generator technology</a><a name="_Hlk528582084"></a>, which meets and exceeds the acceleration of smaller turbochargers, following engine load requirements in real time. Calnetix’s experience can provide the best combination of size, efficiency and integration flexibility.
For heavy trucking, turbocharger systems that integrate Calnetix high-speed permanent magnet motors can drastically improve fuel economy as well as charge batteries to run onboard systems through the recovery of&nbsp;waste heat from the engine’s turbo.&nbsp; This eliminates the need to wastefully run the engine when the vehicle is parked, resulting in fuel savings while reducing CO2&nbsp;emissions.
For light vehicles or passenger cars, smaller turbocharged engines are the growing trend. Calnetix systems are able to eliminate turbo lag and provide more engine torque at low engine speed, allowing for engine downsizing without compressing the vehicle’s performance and driving experience. Further fuel economy is also realized by recuperating energy and supplying it to the vehicle’s ever-growing onboard electrical demand.

On-Road Vehicles

When it comes to harvesting energy or boosting performance, Calnetix provides the leading edge, unsurpassed technology in the high-speed motor generator world. Calnetix’s expertise has led to innovations that have resulted in continuous improvements in machine power densities and increased temperature operating capabilities that are far greater than that of our competitors. Calnetix has reliably demonstrated electrical machines with power densities that are significantly less than 0.1 kg per kW. No industry demands more high-performance systems in the shortest amount of time than motorsports, and Calnetix has the experience to meet those demands.
Since 2008, Calnetix has been involved in designing, developing and producing high performance electrical machines and components for Formula 1 motor racing championship. In 2014, new FIA regulations went into effect requiring for even more efficient power units. Calnetix’s involvement was expanded to encompass both kinetic energy recovery motor generator units (MGU-K) and heat recovery motor generator units (MGU-H), with the latter design matching turbo speeds as high as 135,000 rpm. Most recently, Calnetix added to its motorsports portfolio an advanced high-speed, high-performance motor generator unit for Formula Electric (Formula E).

MHI-MME’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mhi-mme.com/products/metturbocharger/" rel=" noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MET hybrid turbocharger</a>&nbsp;, which incorporates Calnetix’s integrated&nbsp;<a href="/high-speed-electric-motor-generators">Magnaforce™ electric motor generator&nbsp;</a>is designed to&nbsp;provide superior engine performance, decrease fuel consumption and&nbsp;reduce CO2&nbsp;production.&nbsp; The high-speed motor generator is housed within the silencer of the marine turbocharger resulting in a very small footprint.

Marine

Turbo-compounding systems with&nbsp;<a href="/high-speed-electric-motor-generators">Calnetix Magnaforce™ high-speed motor generators</a>&nbsp;enable 7 to 8 percent more power to be produced from existing gensets or allow the same power to be produced from smaller gensets. The improvements in fuel efficiency help keep the engines cleaner, in turn reducing emissions, including black smoke and reducing maintenance costs.
For turbo-compounding or electric turbos, Calnetix's technology and manufacturing expertise provide a long-lasting solution for immediate cost savings and an attractive ROI across multiple engine families for either new engine development or existing engine upgrades. The Magnaforce™ high-speed motor generator systems also can be used in either natural gas or diesel power generation.
