CERRITOS, Calif.– June 17 2024 – Calnetix Technologies today announced that Rasish Khatri, Manager of Rotordynamics and AMB controls, and Larry Hawkins, Director of Technology: Magnetic Bearings, will be presenting a lecture entitled “A Review of Active Magnetic Bearing Technology: Past, Present, and Future” at the annual ASME Turbo Expo 2024: Turbomachinery Technical Conference & Exposition in London.
Mr. Khatri and Mr. Hawkins will be joined for the June 27th presentation by other experienced industry experts from Bivacor, Johnson Controls, and Sapphire Technologies, who will add valuable experience to the discussion topics.
Together, they will provide a complete historic overview of active magnetic bearing (AMB) technology and a survey of the current state of the art. The presenters will describe how AMBs are most commonly employed in applications across various industries and detail the design tradeoffs, such as cost, efficiency, reliability, and vibratory response, that impact system performance.
The lecture will feature field-tested applications of magnetic bearings, such as natural gas turboexpander-generators and chiller compressors. The team will discuss the key features and innovations of controller software that have enabled the development of these high-volume applications.
“AMBs have already been adopted across various applications from flywheels to chillers to submarine power generation. However, the oil and gas industry is often a slow adopter of new technologies, and we think a lack of outreach may partially explain this. As such, this presentation will focus on further expanding the AMB knowledge base to the energy sector,” stated Khatri.
The last part of the presentation will focus on innovations that will drive the next frontier of adoption, such as AMB controllers integrated into the Internet of Things (IoT), digitalization, and enabling the integration of long-range data transfer capabilities. The Calnetix team will present how recent advances helped them develop an AMB-supported blower used in life support systems for habitable space applications. Representatives from Bivacor will present their solution for a total artificial heart (TAH) levitated on magnetic bearings.
“The course is intended for both engineers and technical business development professionals and provides an excellent survey of the underlying technologies,” notes Hawkins.
The 2024 ASME Turbomachinery Expo will focus on developing and clarifying key milestones leading to a net-zero power and propulsion future. This year, the conference’s stated goal is to advance the development of the technologies and illuminate the pathways leading to a sustainable propulsion future.
This Expo will bring together thousands of industry and academic professionals eager to collaborate and share the latest breakthroughs in turbomachinery technologies.
