CERRITOS, Calif.– June 20, 2023 – Calnetix Technologies today announced that Larry Hawkins, Calnetix’s Director of Technology for Magnetic Bearings and Rasish Khatri, Manager of Rotordynamics and AMB controls, will be presenting at the annual ASME Turbo Expo in Boston next week.
The tutorial program will take place from 08:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 26, and include co-presenters Dr. Nicholas Greatrex of BiVACOR and Stephen Arthur of Johnson Controls.
The 120-minute tutorial entitled, ‘A Review of Magnetic Bearing Technology: Past, Present, and Future’ will provide a fundamental appreciation for active magnetic bearing (AMB) design, including the key components comprising an AMB system. The presenters will explain the application of AMBs across a wide variety of industries and discuss the development of a magnetic bearing controller, highlighting key software features. The course will discuss several specific fielded and upcoming AMB applications, including a flywheel for energy storage, a chiller for commercial application, a CO2 blower for space habitability, and an implantable artificial heart device.
“Along with my co-presenters, we will provide practicing engineers information on the design, development, and implementation of an AMB system, starting from early concepts, through prototype testing, to manufacturing improvements for high-volume production,” said Hawkins. “The course highlights design decisions that can be made to optimize cost, schedule, efficiency, reliability, thermal performance and vibratory response among other considerations.”
In addition to the tutorial above, Hawkins and Khatri are also co-authors on a turboexpander-generator technical paper, which will be presented by Calnetix’s subsidiary, Sapphire Technologies at the ASME Turbo Expo.
In its 68th year, the ASME Turbo Expo will focus on power and propulsion industry transformation. This Conference will attract thousands of industry and academic professionals to gather and learn about the latest trends/breakthroughs in turbomachinery.
